Worship & Music

Worship

“O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the Lord our maker.” Psalms 95:6

Worship draws us closer to the heart of God and reveals His character and love. At Eastminster we believe that by regularly fixing our eyes on God, individually and corporately – in the midst of the joys and heartbreaks of life – we will find hope, peace, and true joy. Worship and prayer are powerful activities. They help centre us and through them, the Spirit works to prepare us for lives of love and service.

We invite you to join with us for community worship each Sunday morning at 10 a.m. In our Services, we try to blend contemporary and traditional forms and trust that through word, music, and prayer we may truly commune with God.

The proclamation of the Word is a significant aspect of our worship and through it we seek to learn and find inspiration. Services are usually led by our Lead Minister, Dr. David McMaster. During the early part of the service, there is a children’s time as we seek to introduce faith to the younger generation. The young people then depart for Graceland, our Sunday School program. Throughout the Service, our Music Director, George Couperus, leads us in song. George blends contemporary and traditional hymnody, assisted by our Chancel Choir and occasional worship teams and soloists.

Eastminster services are recorded on video and are sent out via DVD to a number of nursing and retirement homes in the Belleville area as well as to some older members who are no longer able to get to Church regularly. In addition, the sermon is available from late Sunday afternoon on via our YouTube channel, eastminsterunited, as well as through this web site (click on Sermons below).

The sacraments are important to us. We endeavour to hold baptismal services for infants and adults during regular worship times twice a year . Families may also schedule a more private service with our minister at other times. The Lord’s Supper is offered in association with several of the Christian “holy-days” such as World Wide Communion Sunday, the beginning of Advent, Christmas Eve, the first Sunday of Epiphany, the first Sunday in Lent, and on Pentecost Sunday.

In 2018, Eastminster is experimenting with a Wednesday evening family worship time once per month. The service called, “Love Your Soul,” invites young families into a child-friendly environment for music, a short talk on a theme helpful to life and is followed by a fellowship time over pizza and soft drinks. Frequently our musicians and speakers come from other places in the community and bring fresh, inspiring thoughts to our lives. Love Your Soul is at 5:30 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month, October through December, 2018.

Throughout the year we have a number of special Services to mark various events within the religious and cultural calendars. Late February marks the anniversary service for Eastminster. On the last Sunday of October we recognise Reformation Sunday and in 2017 it was wonderful to celebrate the five hundredth anniversary of the Protestant reform movement. In early November we have an annual, Memorial Hymn Sing, and Remembrance Day Services. Then of course there is Christmas, Holy Week, and Easter with our Chancel Choir taking on a cantata around the third Sunday in December.

Memorial Hymn Sing & Victorian Tea
We all lose loved ones, whether family members or individuals who have had meaningful roles in our lives. Each year, Eastminster offers a service of hymns and readings to help us reflect upon those who have passed into the arms of God. Losses can be significant and felt for years after they occur and this service provides an opportunity to honour loved ones with candles, a hymn selection, and a donation to the Eastminster Fund in their name. The Order of Worship for the Memorial Hymn Sing includes the names of those honoured and the donor (although not the amount of donation). The service is followed by a lovely Victorian Tea and scones.

Music

Music is a big part of Eastminster’s ministry. We love to sing and our Director of Music, George Couperus, leads us each Sunday and at other services. The Chancel Choir has approximately twenty-five regular singers and under George’s leadership has won a number of awards at the annual Stirling Sacred Music Festival. The camaraderie experienced in the choir at practice Thursday evening and on Sundays is wonderful. If you would like to join our Choir, please speak to or email George.

Each Christmas season the Choir puts on a Cantata for a packed house at Eastminster and also at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church on a Sunday evening. It is a much-anticipated event in our community.

From time to time, George works with our Lead Minister to include guitars, drums, additional keyboards and other instruments in our services. It is always good to have our young people participate and lead in contemporary worship.

The Sanctuary

Our church sanctuary is very well equipped with audio, video, and lighting equipment. During Services, many of the words of the songs we sing are projected onto a large screen at the front of the sanctuary. The audio and lighting equipment are such that we have hosted a number of concerts and live music events. Some suggest that Eastminster is one of the best music venues in Belleville and that makes it a very good venue for the main focus of what we do – worship.
